Types of PAT testing

We can test a wide variety of items and each PAT test will include a visual inspection and a more in-depth check using specialist equipment. Each test will confirm that an appliance is safe to use until the next test. The frequency of testing will depend upon the type of equipment and environment that it is used in.

  • Class 1: Class 1 and Class 2 appliances use mains voltage and PAT Testing ensures that each appliance has two layers of safety to protect the end-user, so if one fails, the other ones are in place. PAT testing ensures that both layers are working effectively.

Class 1 appliances, which typically include fridges, microwaves, and toasters have a combination of insulation and an earth connection, so Insulation Resistance and Earth Continuity tests are carried out.

  • Class 2: Class 2, or Double Insulated appliances do not have an earth connection, and only Insulation Resistance tests are carried out. Examples of Class 2 appliances include computers, photocopiers, and plastic power tools. We are always happy to carry out testing out-of-hours to minimise disruption.

  • 110v, 240v & 415v Appliances: Our engineers have the experience to test all types of appliances from 110v appliances, such as kettles and toasters to 415v appliances such as power tools and industrial equipment.

  • IEC & Extension Leads: Here at UK PAT, we have specialist IEC and extension lead testing equipment to test for Earth Continuity, Insulation Resistance, and Polarity.

Failed items

There are occasions when products will fail a PAT test. Our engineers will detail the reason for the failed test on the report, to make sure it is not used until any defect is corrected and it is then deemed safe to do so.

If minor faults are discovered during the visual inspection, we can make free repairs, if time and resources allow. We can then retest the appliance. Examples of this could be rewiring of incorrect connections to the mains plug or replacement of incorrectly rated fuses. If the failure is due to an electrical reading, we would recommend repair over replacement.
